Minister Thariq Ibrahim has announced that the current government has, to date, leased out 31 sites for tourism development. Of these, 16 were allocated through closed bidding, 11 through cross-subsidy arrangements, and 4 through open bidding.

The government has introduced a range of special incentives aimed at expanding tourism across six atolls of the Maldives. These incentives include reduced acquisition costs, deferred rent payments until the properties become operational, and duty exemptions.

In addition, the government is placing particular emphasis on the promotion of halal tourism, with lease acquisition costs for such projects reduced by 20 percent.

Minister Thariq further stated that seven new resorts are set to open within this year, adding more than 1,000 beds to the country’s tourism capacity.
