The Cuban government has announced that 32 of its citizens were killed during a U.S. military incursion into Venezuela aimed at apprehending President Nicolás Maduro.

While specific details remain limited, Havana confirmed that the casualties included personnel from the Cuban military and intelligence services. In honor of those described as “national heroes,” the Cuban government has declared January 5th and 6th as days of national mourning.

Since President Maduro assumed office, Cuban military personnel have been active in Venezuela, providing security assistance to his administration. However, the exact number of Cuban troops stationed in the country has never been officially disclosed.

President Maduro is currently being held at a detention center in New York. The Venezuelan government has characterized the incident as a kidnapping by the United States.

The U.S. authorities are reportedly preparing to bring multiple charges against Maduro, including allegations of narco-trafficking and orchestrating terrorist activities. He is expected to be arraigned in a Manhattan federal court later today.
