Chief Justice Abdul Ghani Mohamed has announced that Maldivian courts delivered judgments in over 20,000 cases by the end of last year. Speaking at the ceremony to inaugurate the “Judicial Year 2026,” the Chief Justice shared insights into the judiciary’s achievements over the past year and outlined key objectives for the current year. He noted a significant improvement in the efficiency of court proceedings compared to previous periods.

Chief Justice Abdul Ghani Mohamed emphasized that despite long-standing structural and systemic challenges, judges and administrative staff remained steadfast in their commitment to upholding justice. He detailed that in 2025, legal proceedings and necessary judicial formalities were conducted for a total of 34,242 cases across various courts.

According to the Chief Justice, 20,898 new cases were registered in the Maldives’ courts last year, while 13,351 cases were carried over from previous years. Out of these, a total of 20,442 cases reached a final judgment by the end of the year.

“In 2025, the case clearance rate for Maldivian courts stood at 107%. Considering the clearance rate in 2024 was 96%, this represents a notable improvement of 11%. We are determined to achieve even greater progress in 2026,” the Chief Justice stated.

The Chief Justice further noted that as of the end of last year, there were 1,332 cases pending for over a year. Consequently, the judiciary’s top priority for this year will be the resolution of these long-standing cases. Estimating that approximately 21,000 new cases will be filed across the courts this year, he expressed confidence that all cases currently pending for more than a year will be concluded within the 2026 judicial term.
