The Criminal Court has sentenced two individuals to death in the case of the murder of 17-year-old Ahmed Udayyu, which occurred during an assault in G.A. Maamendhoo four years ago. Ahmed Shameem of Rihifarudhage and Mohamed Mazin of Gulfaamge, both from Maamendhoo, were sentenced to death. The death sentences were issued as Udayyu’s heirs had requested the death penalty. In this assault, which took place on February 8, 2021, Udayyu’s elder brother, Firshan Zahir, was also injured.

In this case, although Sharaf Rashid of Bilathmage from the same island was not found guilty of intentional murder, he was convicted of assaulting another person with a sharp object and sentenced to seven years in prison. Mazin was also found guilty of this offense and sentenced to 10 years in prison. Additionally, a 17-year-old juvenile was previously convicted in the Juvenile Court in connection with Udayyu’s death and sentenced to 25 years in prison.
