The government has officially initiated the infrastructural and administrative preparations required to establish two separate council secretariats in Hulhudhoo and Meedhoo of Addu City. Following the public referendum held last year, the Ministry of Cities, Local Government and Public Works is currently working to facilitate the necessary buildings, resources, and staffing for the two councils, which are scheduled to be elected this April.
In addition, the administration is undertaking a broader initiative to improve the condition of local councils across the Maldives. This includes the construction of new office buildings and the decentralization of essential services, such as the issuance of national identity cards and passports, to ensure they are accessible directly from the islands. Furthermore, plans are underway to establish Public Works units in 19 islands to expedite local municipal tasks. These measures are designed to strengthen the decentralization system and provide efficient services closer to the citizens.
