Concerns Mount Over Escalating Aasandha Expenditures and Associated Risks

As healthcare spending in the Maldives continues to rise annually, the fiscal burden of Aasandha and the social safety net system has reached an unprecedented 3 billion Rufiyaa. The Auditor General has highlighted that this surge poses significant challenges to the nation’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and the implementation of essential developmental projects.

Of particular concern is the increasing volume of expenditures occurring outside the standard Aasandha framework. This underscores the urgent need for a more sustainable system—one that effectively regulates healthcare costs and prioritizes assistance for those in greatest need.

While the government has proposed strategies to curb these expenses—including the bulk procurement of pharmaceuticals and the introduction of a means-tested approach where wealthier citizens contribute to their medical costs—these measures are yet to be fully and effectively implemented.
