President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has announced that the practical work on a specialized cancer center is scheduled to begin by mid-year. Delivering the Presidential Address, the President stated that this center will significantly strengthen the nation’s diagnostic and treatment framework for cancer.

Outlining the government’s health sector initiatives for the current year, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu detailed that the development of a specialized cancer diagnostic center will commence mid-year. He further noted that the facility will include a radiation chamber, which will provide radiation therapy—a vital service currently unavailable within the Maldives.

“The work to establish a diagnostic center, which includes a dedicated radiation chamber for cancer treatment, will begin in the middle of this year,” the President remarked.

The government has previously confirmed that land has been allocated in Hulhumalé for the construction of a specialized cancer hospital.

The President also highlighted several other major healthcare projects set to launch in the Malé region this year. This includes the physical work on a 100-bed tertiary hospital in Villimalé, to be built with grant aid from the Chinese government. Furthermore, he revealed that the development of a 500-bed multi-specialty hospital in Hulhumalé Phase 2 is expected to begin by mid-year.

In his Presidential Address, the President also detailed significant expansion plans for Hulhumalé Hospital. He announced that work on a 250-bed multi-specialty tertiary hospital, as an extension of the existing facility, will start by the middle of the year. Additionally, he shared plans to introduce an additional MRI machine, establish urology services with urodynamic testing, and launch gastroenterology services with a dedicated endoscopy suite. The President also noted that neurology services, including OPD and EEG facilities, will be initiated, along with the introduction of CXL surgery, the expansion of ophthalmology services, and the establishment of a dental laboratory at Hulhumalé Hospital within this year.
