
A Chinese company has produced canned fish from tuna exported from the Maldives to China. This is the first sample batch produced by the company. The canned fish from Maldivian tuna was produced through a collaboration between a Chinese company called Weihai Qiuzi Blusea Foods Company Limited and the Jing Weidao brand. The canned fish produced by the company has been presented to the Maldivian Ambassador to China, Fazeel Najeeb. A special ceremony was also held in China for this occasion.
Regarding this matter, the Minister of Fisheries and Marine Resources, Ahmed Shiyam, stated that this endeavor is a path that opened up as a result of the Maldives-China Free Trade Agreement. With this agreement, the duty on fish products exported from the Maldives to China has been reduced to zero.
Minister Shiyam said that the duty exemption on fish products exported from the Maldives under the Maldives-China Free Trade Agreement is a robust step taken by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu to advance and expand the Maldivian fishing industry. He noted that this would open up new markets for Maldivian fish products,ian fish products, increase the value of Maldivian fish, and boost demand. The Maldives-China Free Trade Agreement came into effect on January 1st of this year. The government had previously stated that this agreement would pave the way for numerous trade and investment opportunities between the Maldives and China.
With the Maldives-China Free Trade Agreement, 296 types of seafood can be exported to China without any duty. Additionally, Maldivian businesses will have the opportunity to import seafood products to the Maldives, add value in compliance with WTO standards, and export them to China.
