Chelsea has lifted the Club World Cup trophy after defeating European champions PSG 3-0. Chelsea scored all three goals in the first half of the match. Cole Palmer secured two goals in the 22nd and 30th minutes, giving Chelsea the lead, while Yao Pedro scored the third goal in the 43rd minute, assisted by Palmer. Even before Palmer’s first goal, he had sent a dangerous shot that narrowly missed the goalpost.
In the first half, Chelsea’s goalkeeper Robert Sanchez managed to save a header from Desiree Doue and João Neves, while in the second half, he also blocked attempts from Kvicha Kvaratskhelia and Vitinha. PSG’s goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma saved two shots from Chelsea’s forward Liam Delap, who came on as a substitute in the second half.
PSG had to finish the match with one player down. This occurred when João Neves grabbed and pulled Chelsea’s Marc Cucurella by the hair with just five minutes left in full time, resulting in a red card for Neves.
The final match was only the second time PSG conceded a goal in the tournament. They reached the final by winning all their matches in the group stage without conceding, except for a 1-0 loss to Botafogo.
UEFA Conference League champions Chelsea conceded a total of three goals in three matches. Chelsea also lost one match in the group stage. Chelsea’s Sanchez was named the tournament’s best goalkeeper, while Cole Palmer won the best player award. Desiree Doue received the most promising player award, and Real Madrid’s Raul Garcia was the top scorer.
Chelsea has previously won the Club World Cup. They played in the final twice before, lifting the trophy in 2021. However, this year FIFA has completely changed the tournament format for the first time, including 32 teams. From now on, the Club World Cup will be held every four years.
