The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has urged the public and candidates to refrain from engaging in acts of bribery in connection with the upcoming Local Council Elections and the Women’s Development Committee elections. The Commission noted that this period marks a critical phase where independent candidates and political party representatives are actively seeking support from voters for the 2026 Local Council Elections. The ACC emphasized the importance of abstaining from bribery and stressed that all parties must strictly adhere to the fundamental democratic principles that govern general elections.

The Commission observed that bribery often surfaces during general elections in the Maldives, both in the pursuit of support by candidates and in the exercise of the right to vote. The ACC highlighted that the rise in such cases undermines public trust in state institutions. Therefore, the Commission underscored the necessity for citizens to prioritize integrity when making election-related decisions. According to the ACC, the true empowerment and benefits of a decentralized administrative system can only be realized through the informed decisions made by citizens in the Local Council Elections. The primary objective of these elections is to appoint capable and competent individuals who will take responsibility for decision-making and the development of their respective constituencies and islands.

The ACC stated that for the future of the nation, it is vital for citizens to exercise individual responsibility in preventing corruption. Candidates who seek office by purchasing votes through bribery are seen as individuals who strip the people of their genuine power to serve their own self-interests. Furthermore, the Commission noted that accepting bribes and selling one’s electoral right for temporary personal gain is an act of betrayal against oneself, one’s family, and the entire community. Special attention has been given within the Maldivian legal framework to prevent bribery in elections. Consequently, the Commission urged all parties to refrain from any act of bribery as defined in the General Elections Act. They also called upon the public to report any offers of money or gifts intended as bribes.

In addition, the ACC requested that any information regarding acts of corruption by candidates or campaign teams that could influence electoral outcomes be reported immediately. Reports should include detailed information, identifying the individuals or institutions involved and the timeframe of the incident. The Anti-Corruption Commission assured the public that any such matters brought to their attention or identified by the Commission will be thoroughly investigated.
