Renowned businessman Champa Hussein Afeef, who donated an Olympic-sized swimming pool to the Maldives, has said that building such a pool in the country is an honor. Speaking to PSM News after laying the foundation for the new 50-meter swimming pool, Afeef said that having a swimming pool of this caliber would be an honor when considering hosting international competitions in the Maldives in the future.
“I won’t say it’s mine, I’ll say it’s the nation’s. So it’s an honor, a pride for the country, and that makes me very happy,” Afeef said. He stated that this is not his work alone, but a contribution to Maldivian sports from the entire Champa family. Afeef has appealed to current athletes to make use of such facilities and bring a good name to the country. The four-story swimming complex will be prepared with the most modern facilities and for conducting swimming training. When completed, the complex will have a 50-meter pool and a 25-meter pool.
All the equipment neede needed for the pool, for which the foundation has been laid, has been imported from abroad. The Swimming Association estimates that this work will be completed in November of this year.
