Addressing the prolonged detention of individuals awaiting trial, commonly referred to as “Vanuva” detention, remains a high-priority pledge of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu. Following the inauguration of a Criminal Court annex in Hulhumalé to alleviate space constraints, judicial operations have seen a significant 140% increase in efficiency, leading to the resolution of numerous pending cases.

The President’s objective is to conclude all cases involving individuals who have been detained for over a year by the end of March this year. Based on current judicial statistics and the accelerated pace of proceedings, it is projected that the entire case backlog will be cleared within the calendar year. Furthermore, to fortify judicial independence, the administration has introduced a block grant system and finalized plans to construct a modern Superior Court Complex in Hulhumalé.
