Israel has martyred Anas Al-Sharif, a journalist who was bringing news of Gaza to the entire world, along with three other journalists and an assistant in an attack on an Al Jazeera press apartment in Gaza, Palestine. Israel launched a rocket attack targeting a press apartment established near Al-Shifa Hospital in eastern Gaza. In addition to the journalists, two other people were also martyred in the attack. The other journalists martyred in the Israeli attack are Mohammed Naufal, Mohammed Qariqa, and Ibrahim Zahir. Anas Al-Sharif, one of the martyred journalists, was also part of a Reuters team that won the Pulitzer Prize in 2024. The award was for photographs related to the Gaza war.
Al Jazeera has described Anas as one of the bravest journalists in Gaza. Anas was active in bringing news of Israel’s inhumane aggression in Gaza to the world while receiving numerous threats from Israel. Israel is working to silence the voices of journalists active in Gaza and close the channels that bring Gaza’s stories to the world. Al Jazeera said that the voice of Anas and the journalists working with him was one of the last voices active in Gaza to deliver the tragic reality of Gaza to the world.
Journalists and journalism organizations active in various parts of the world have strongly condemned this Israeli attack on the press apartment. Previously, a journalism freedom advocacy organization and a UN expert had warned that Anas Al-Sharif was at risk due to the news he was reporting. Israel had been spreading false claims that Al-Sharif was associated with Hamas.
Anticipating his martyrdom, Anas Al-Sharif had prepared a message to be shared on social media after his death. In the message, Anas said that no matter how much pain he endured, he never hesitated to deliver the truth to the world in its most complete form without any alterations or changes. He stated that those who remain silent while Israel launches inhumane attacks on Gaza will be known to the Creator. In his emotional message, he further said that he was bidding farewell to this world, entrusting the beloved Gaza and its people – a jewel of Muslims and the heartbeat of every free person – to everyone. The Hamas movement, which governs Gaza, said that 237 journalists have been martyred so far in the attacks launched by Israel on October 7, 2023, to commit genocide against the people of Gaza.
