As part of the activities organized by the Ministry of Tourism and Environment in connection with World Tourism Day, a special event was held at the airport to welcome tourists visiting the Maldives. This event is a joint initiative between the Ministry of Tourism and Environment and Maldives Airports Company Limited. This year’s World Tourism Day theme is “Tourism and Sustainable Transformation.”

Speaking to PSM News about this event, MACL’s Chief Commercial Officer, Mohamed Mihadh, said that the welcoming event for tourists is planned to be held at all airports in the Maldives.
“In connection with World Tourism Day, as part of this event organized by MACL in collaboration with the Tourism Ministry, we are conducting some activities that incorporate Maldivian cultural elements to welcome tourists arriving in the Maldives. Similarly, regional airports are also an important component of the Maldives’ transport system for taking tourists to various resorts. 18 percent of tourists arriving at VIA go to regional airports. We are also conducting this event at regional airports today,” Mihadh said.

The government aims to bring 2.3 million tourists to the Maldives this year. While 1.5 million tourists have visited the Maldives so far, MACL states that more than 7,000 tourists are scheduled to arrive in the Maldives today alone. World Tourism Day was first celebrated internationally in 1980. Since then, this day has been celebrated on September 27th every year, and it is a very important day for the global tourism industry and the Maldives as well.
