Work has begun on developing a dive wreck site by sinking two airplanes in the lagoon of K. Kudagiri. The project is being carried out jointly by MMRC, MTCC, and HDC. The planes being sunk in Kudagiri lagoon are two Dornier aircraft previously used by Air Maldives. As part of the sinking process, the area has already been cleared. Preparations for sinking the planes are currently underway.
The EIA report for the project states that there could be health and physical injury risks to individuals during the handling and transportation of the airplanes. It also mentions that those working at sea during the development of the dive site may face physical and health risks.
The report indicates that to minimize the risk of health and physical harm to those involved in the project, the responsible party must educate and train participants on safe working practices. Kudagiri is an island developed by the previous government for residents of the Male’ area to visit. This modern picnic island also has rooms for travelers to stay.
