The Minister of Islamic Affairs, Dr. Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed, has announced that the government aims to make the Maldives the nation with the highest per capita number of individuals who have memorized the Holy Quran (Hafiz) in the Islamic world. Speaking at a graduation ceremony for Hafizs, the Minister stated that efforts will be made to increase the number of Hafizs in the Maldives to 500 within the next five years. Currently, there are 301 Hafizs in the country, with this year marking a historic milestone as 31 individuals graduated—the highest number in a single year to date.

To expand Quranic education, the government spent 19 million Rufiyaa last year and has increased the allowances for students memorizing the Quran. Furthermore, as part of the initiative to establish branches of the National Centre for the Holy Quran in every island, there are plans to create 50 new branches this year. The Minister noted that over 1,800 students are currently in the process of memorizing the Quran. He also highlighted that, in addition to the state budget, support for this field is being received from the Zakat Fund and well-wishers. Additionally, the Minister appealed for the assistance of the business community in the construction of Islamic centers and mosques.
