Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin met in Alaska, USA, on August 15. During that meeting, discussions were held regarding ending the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine. Although no agreement was reached to end the war during those discussions, both leaders have described the meeting as successful consultations.
After this meeting, which lasted about three hours, Trump spoke with Zelenskyy, Western military alliance NATO, and Western leaders. The call included European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, French President Emmanuel Macron, and leaders from Germany, Finland, Poland, Italy, and the United Kingdom. Trump spoke with them while en route back to Washington from Alaska. Zelenskyy said the 90-minute phone call was long and substantive. Zelenskyy stated that he supports Trump’s proposal for America, Russia, and Ukraine to sit at the same table for discussions. He also mentioned discussing with Trump the indications from the US regarding their involvement in ensuring Ukraine’s security.
In a post on X, Zelenskyy further said that Ukraine is pushing for discussions at the leadership level of the three countries on important issues, and that joint discussions by the three countries are the most appropriate way to address these issues. He also stated that he will meet with Trump next Monday and will conduct detailed discussions on stopping bloodshed and war.
