With an amendment to the state’s pay framework, the National Pay Commission has now introduced a policy that allows official duties to be performed during unofficial hours. Under this policy, named “Flexible Working Time,” employees working in maintenance, inspection, survey, and IT sectors will have the opportunity to carry out tasks during alternative hours if these tasks are difficult to perform during official working hours. The objective is to improve work outcomes and further strengthen services provided to the public.
These changes come at a time when, following the implementation of the state’s pay framework in 2022, many employees have received salary increments. The Ministry of Finance has stated that effective this month, no employee’s basic salary will be less than MVR 7,400. The Pay Commission notes that some employees previously received a basic salary of MVR 3,100. Furthermore, the Commission’s aim is for this policy to bring a positive change to the workplace culture, prioritizing results over mere attendance. The Pay Commission also stated that similar changes previously introduced in the education and health sectors have shown positive results.
