This year has marked a significant turning point in the Maldivian healthcare sector, with the Aasandha scheme expanding to cover numerous long-awaited medical treatments. Under the enhanced fertility care framework, the Maldives celebrated its first birth conceived through IVF. As many citizens continue to benefit from the government-established Fertility Fund, a “generational ban” on tobacco has been introduced to safeguard public health. To support this initiative, Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT) has been made accessible across every inhabited island in the country.
Furthermore, the scope of Aasandha has been broadened to include comprehensive mental health services and coverage for prescription spectacles. The government’s primary objective remains to minimize waste and enhance efficiency, ensuring that the Aasandha scheme becomes a resilient and sustainable healthcare system for the future.
