Former Construction Minister Mauroof Jameel has been appointed today by PCB as the new Managing Director of Housing Development Corporation (HDC). Mauroof Jameel has been one of the key figures in the development of Hulhumalé since its reclamation. When the reclamation of Hulhumalé began, Mauroof played a leading role in the project while at the Construction Ministry.
Later, when the Hulhumalé Development Unit was established under the President’s Office, Mauroof was appointed as its Director General or the top official. And with the establishment of HDC, he briefly held the position of CEO of the company. Mauroof left HDC when he was appointed as the Construction Minister during the last term of former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom’s presidency.
Mauroof, who was at the forefront of the vision for Hulhumalé’s development and its sustained growth, is now returning to the top position in Hulhumalé after about 18 years, at a time when major corruption allegations within HDC are being investigated.
HDC’s Managing Director Ibrahim Fazul Rasheed resigned from his position last night amid corruption allegations. Issues surrounding Fazul came to light when it was revealed that his brother and MWSC’s Deputy Managing Director Mohamed Fazeel Rasheed was given a plot registration despite being on the list of those not qualifying for the Binveriya scheme. With the revelation that others were also given registrations in this manner, the entire board of HDC, except for Chairman Ahmed Nasif (DD), has been suspended.
Along with Fazul, passports of 20 individuals, including some employees of HDC and the Housing Ministry, have been withheld, and the police and ACC have begun a major investigation under the order of Prosecutor General Abbas Shareef.
