The government has set a strategic target to complete the construction of the fish processing factory in GDh. Fiyoari and commence operations by Fishermen’s Day next year. Under this project, land reclamation and harbor development works are currently underway, with completion expected within the next six months.
In collaboration with a Chinese company, the project’s scope has been expanded to include a 3,000-metric-ton cold storage facility, a canning plant with a daily capacity of 100 tons, and a fishmeal plant. This initiative is a vital step toward addressing the challenges faced by fishermen in the southern region, who contribute 60 percent of the Maldives’ total fish catch, while simultaneously boosting the economy of Huvadhu Atoll. The government’s broader objective is to increase the nation’s total cold storage capacity from 9,500 tons to 25,000 tons.
