Criminal charges have been filed against former national team player Ashad Ali (Adhubarey). The charges filed against Ashad include assault, property damage, and threatening to commit an act that could cause injury to a person. The Criminal Court has scheduled hearings related to these three charges for tomorrow. However, it is not yet clear which case these charges are related to. Ashad is the person who stood as guarantor for former Tourism Minister Ali Waheed, who was accused of sexual harassment and rape, to leave the country. Adhubarey was also jailed for 15 days for failing to produce Ali Waheed in court. At that time, he was serving as a State Minister at the Ministry of Youth. He completed that sentence and was released on March 6, 2022.
Ali Waheed’s close friend Ashad was sentenced to 15 days in jail in absentia while he was in the United Kingdom. He was imprisoned upon his return to the Maldives. The verdict against Ashad stated that there was no evidence of any effort made by the guarantor to bring Ali Waheed back. It also stated that not bringing Ali Waheed back within 72 hours was a violation of a court order and contempt of court.
