
Statistics from the Maldives Industrial Fisheries Company (MIFCO) show that 9 million rufiyaa was released for fish caught by fishermen last week. According to MIFCO’s statistics, the number of fishing boats that went out fishing during Eid al-Fitr and the 6 days of fasting has decreased. As such, 101 boats weighed fish at MIFCO last week. While 9 million rufiyaa was released to fishermen last week, the most fish was weighed on April 4. On that day, 4 million rufiyaa was released to 37 boats.
According to statistics released by MIFCO, the government’s fish company, 177 boats weighed fish at MIFCO the week before. And a total of 11.9 million rufiyaa was released to those boats.

In line with President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s pledge, money is being released within 48 hours for fish weighed by fishermen. This pledge began to be implemented on the past Fishermen’s Day. According to information provided by MIFCO, the number of boats going out for fishing has increased with this new system.
Expanding the fishing industry and making fishing one of the largest revenue-generating industries for the Maldives is a goal of the government. As such, work is ongoing to develop fishing facilities to solve the problems faced by the fishing industry within the first 3 years of the government. In this regard, the company is working on building a fish canning factory in Hulhumale with the help of the Islamic Development Bank.
