46 Dead and Hundreds Missing in Heavy Rains in Kashmir

46 people have died in incidents caused by heavy rains in Indian-controlled Kashmir. This is the second time in about a week that Kashmir has experienced sudden heavy rainfall. Officials in Kashmir said about 200 people are missing due to the flooding.

The area most affected by the flooding is the Chaisoti neighborhood in the Kishtwar region. This This is a neighborhood located on a road frequently used by many travelers. Earlier this week, heavy rains caused flooding in many areas, leading to landslides.

Officials said that a public kitchen and a security post in the area were swept away by the floodwaters. “The heavy rain suddenly started when many travelers were having lunch, and they were all swept away by the force of the water,” said an unnamed official.

Jammu and Kashmir’s Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has confirmed that 46 people have died and more than 200 are missing due to the flooding. He said that the information received so far regarding this tragic incident has been verified. He also mentioned that more information about the deceased and missing people is still coming in.

Efforts to provide assistance to those affected by this incident and to search for missing people have now begun. Reports say that many officials from disaster-related agencies are now active in this work. “Army and Air Force teams have also been deployed, and the search for missing people has begun,” said Ramesh Kumar, Commissioner of the Kishtwar region.

The Indian Meteorological Department said that the Kishtwar region received 100 millimeters of rain in just one hour. This led to sudden flooding over a large area, causing landslides in many areas. This is a disaster that commonly occurs in the mountainous areas of Kishtwar during the monsoon season.
