President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has set an ambitious target to welcome 2.5 million tourists to the Maldives this year. This represents an 11.3% increase compared to the previous year, with projected tourism revenue expected to reach USD 5.6 billion. To further bolster the tourism sector, which remains the backbone of the nation’s economy, the government has designated 2027 as ‘Visit Maldives Year’. Over the past two years, the industry has seen an expansion of 6,535 beds, and seven new resorts are scheduled to open this year. Furthermore, a key government policy includes facilitating investments, including Halal tourism, in atolls where the tourism footprint has historically been limited.
